We forgot that our hearts didn’t belong to each other

One of us

One of us had left a heart with their name on it

One of us

One of us had promised to have steady hands to another, to never drop their heart

To never drop the ball

To be consistent

To never allow space and absence to choke what was new and hopeful

One of us

One of us was here but not here

There

One of us was trying to be here and there and we could both see that omnipresence was a gift God had denied us

We tried

We stood on the edge of what is expected by God and what our flesh wanted

We played with the boundaries whilst still being moralistic about every moment we spent in our space

Our space

Our space, where absence wasn’t a problem

We were here and also there

One of us was available and the other was teetering at the edge of our boundary

Uncertain of what it meant to be in two places at once

The great thing is that time will always humble you

Time will remind you that you can never hold it

You can not somehow cage it and allow your heart to hold on to “timeless” moments

It ticks and ticks and exhausts your moments

They become memories and one of us

One of us

One of us did not defy time

One of us created space and absence between us

One of us did not defy time

One of us went back to the heart with their name on it and closed the space and absence with that heart

Went on like their heart had not once wished time would stop with us

One of us created space and absence between u-s

Both of us knew that our hearts never belonged there

One of us wondered if God could be so cruel

If loving

Could God bring your heart close to the edge of falling and watch as you fought to keep your balance?

The heart is deceitful above all things

And desperately wicked

Who can know it?

These hearts of ours, these hearts of ours will not be the reason, reason escapes us.

One.
